Thought Leadership Committee
What is Thought Leadership?

A thought leader is a business term for an entity or person that is recognized and cited with having innovative ideas and expertise in a given field or industry.  In the context of homeland security, we think of thought leadership as formulating ideas and insightful points of view on the issues our country and government faces in trying to accomplish the mission of homeland security, capturing those ideas in multiple formats and sharing those ideas with government and other homeland security partners to enlighten them, engage them in dialogue, influence discussions, and position our member companies and industry representatives as trusted resources. The goal of the Council's Thought Leadership activities is to engage leadership and exchange ideas in a manner that helps the Department of Homeland Security solve problems and achieve success within its five missions, as well as to assist in strengthening and maturing the entire homeland security enterprise.

The Council's Thought Leadership Committee and Special Topic Work Groups:
The Thought Leadership Committee (TLC) is open to the entire membership and involves the senior leadership of the Council's member companies.  The TLC meets quarterly and works to identify and analyze the issues, challenges, and trends that confront the homeland security industry, and find ways to engage and have substantive discussions on these issues with their counterparts in government.  The committee helps develop long- and short- term strategic goals and initiatives to address those issues in the most appropriate and effective ways in order to enhance the Council's overall mission and bring value to our entire membership.

The TLC does not vote on issues.  Sometimes it may reach a consensus view on topics but it also provides an opportunity for the different perspectives and intellectual capital of each member company to be represented and considered when planning and engaging on public policy conversations with the public sector.  A major component of the TLC are five (5) special-topic workgroups focused on addressing the common themes and issues that arise within and across DHS' five mission areas and that help mature and strengthen the overall homeland security enterprise.  The work groups are made up of relevant subject matter experts from the Council's member companies.

The TLC gives guidance and recommendations on the priority areas of focus for the work groups and helps oversee and coordinate their efforts.  The work groups serve as subject matter advisors and are responsible for developing plans to implement and address the priorities and recommendations provided by the TLC.
Each of the workgroups, individually and collectively, help to further define the issues and determine the best means for sharing and representing industry's various points of view.  They work closely with the full Thought Leadership Committee and the broader Council leadership to assess priorities, progress and direction.
